Səbˈmərj

The gravitational pull of the sun and moon on Earth’s water bodies creates tides, which are rising higher each year due to increasing sea levels. Since 1992, there has been a global sea level rise of 3.98 inches. Each inch of sea level rise corresponds to 2.5 meters of beachfront lost along the average coast annually. This results in more storm surges and higher tides each year, leading to more flooding incidents around the globe. The rising sea level, driven by climate change, will significantly influence the migration of people and animals in the coming decades.

The project ‘səbˈmərj’ explores the effects of rising sea levels on the local community and wildlife. To illustrate the changes in sea level over a short period, the photographer has made multiple visits to the location at different times of the day during Autumn and Winter. Tide pools are replenished with each tide, serving as nurturing grounds for various species. Some organisms seek shelter and lay eggs, while others use these pools as hunting grounds.
